Child Welfare

The National Child Welfare Program was established in 1923 at The American Legion National Convention in New Orleans with an annual assessment of 50 cents from dues collections. In 1924 the fund amounted to $25,000 to be used for orphaned or needy children. Today through those efforts, the C. W. Ardery Fund aids needy children with food, clothing, and other emergency needs, through pin sales, the 50 cent assessment on Voyageurs dues and donations.

National Boxcar Association

One such program is The National Boxcar Association which works with and aids Handicapped Children of all ages. At the National Promenade monies from Boxcar membership are distributed to all the 40/8 programs, The Boland Fund, The Ardery Fund, and Carville Star. The best donation is the "Childrens Party" at the National Promenade. All it asks is $1.00 dues to belong.

Nurses Training

The National Nurses Training Program was established in 1955. Through our efforts on the Voiture and National level (The Boland Trust Fund) we try to meet the need for Registered Nurses by sponsoring them through college or accredited nursing school to get their B.A. Degree to become a Registered Nurse. In the first 40 years we have helped 25,000 nurses to get their degrees to become nurses at a cost of over $15 million. Each Voiture usually sponsors a nurse or more per year through school for 4 years.

The Star

In 1947 La Societe began it's long association with the Gillis W. Long Hansen's Disease Center in Carville, La.(formerly known as the U.S. Marine Hospital). Through publishing of the Carville Star and purchasing equipment to help the patients carry on the fight against the ignorance of Hansen's Disease (better known as Leprosy). Please visit Our National Homepage which explains it better than I ever can.
