Shifting Gears

Leaving behind an unfulfilling job in the New York City film industry, Bob Neubauer set out on his bike to see what life was like on the rest of the East Coast. Guided by a few maps and a thirst for adventure, he meandered along rural back roads, meeting strangers, listening to their stories and enjoying their unexpected hospitality.

But not everything went perfectly.

Biking on the Mt. Vernon bike trail in Virginia.Searing summer heat drained his energy, dog attacks and overzealous preachers kept him running, the road tore his bike slowly apart, and he spent many a nervous night bedding down where he didn't belong. Far from home, he faced wearying hardships that dragged his spirits to the absolute bottom. But through it all, the people who crossed his path, sometimes offering only a kind word, gave him the inspiration he needed to persevere.

Two Wheels and a Map details Bob Neubauer's two-part solo bike journey from Bangor, Maine, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His amusing observations on the people and predicaments that he encountered along the way give the book a lighthearted tone as it chronicles his life on the open road.

Author's Note

I've never been one to stick to the highways. What's happening on the back roads is far more interesting.

In my many years of cycling, I've veered down countless quiet country roads, enjoying their beauty and exploring their secrets. Even when I have no idea where I'm heading, I'm excited just to be on a back road, away from the rest Camping out in a South Carolina pine forest.of the world. Roads that bear "Bridge Out" or "Road Closed" signs are natural magnets for me in my quest to see what few people ever see.

This habit has, inevitably, led me into some odd situations. At times I've had to wade through hip-deep streams, holding my bike over my head, or battle my way through thick woods, searching for some sign of the road I had been following. I've been hopelessly lost, I've been trapped in lightning storms, I've had crippling breakdowns far from home, I've been hit by cars, I've asked strangers for help and been on wild goose chases, I even broke into a prison by mistake once-all in the name of exploration.

This book details my bike trip down the East Coast of the U.S. Like many of my previous bike excursions, this journey yielded more than its share of odd predicaments, all of which I've attempted to capture in this book.

More than just a collection of comical situations, however, this book offers a look at the folks I met along the way. Most of them were incredibly generous and helpful. The glimpses I got into their lives taught me a lot, and I ended the trip with a much different outlook on the world.

Triumphant finish!Beyond the stories of people and predicaments, though, I tried to capture the overwhelming feeling of freedom I got from being out alone on the open road, with no schedules, no responsibilities and nothing more important to do than enjoy each day. So if you like the thought of leaving your job, your obligations and your life behind, and taking off on a bike to discover new places-and you don't mind a bit of sarcasm and wit-then this tale just might keep you smiling.
