Incitement of Sabotage and Subversion

Series of Leaflets encouraging Indonesians to acts of sabotage. The outside covers will be purported instructions by Japanese to natives on how to behave in an air raid. Inside will be straight underground job on sabotage instructions emphasizing cover afforded by blackout. Selimoetan Project, April 1, 1943

In the event of an air raid. The Japanese will be busy manning their air raid defenses. Individual Japanese will be rushing to their posts. This is your chance to sneak up behind the lone Jap. Make him pay for what you have suffered. Remember: your kris or knife serves many purposes. Do it silently. Cover his mouth so he can't scream. Make your weapon find its mark. Air Raid Instructions, circa 1945

Japan steals the people's rice. Our wives and children Japan removes. This such as this occur every day. The agony we bear cannot be expressed. Awake brothers and friends, whoever desires to be a hero. Let us fight Japan so that Indonesia will not be taken captive. - The Society of the Blood Banteng of Indonesia. Rice leaflet, circa 1945

There are thousands of ways of fighting Japan. Select the one that is in accord with your means. First of all, don't forget that every one of you prays in a congregation -- particularly so between the time of sundown and sunset. That is the best time to advise the inhabitants of your village with advice such as this. Open Letter to Village Chiefs in Sumatra, March 3, 1945

On the back of this panteon is Japanese writing, the language of the small bastardly ones. Post this sticker at every crossroad, where many of our enemies stay. Stick-ups on Trees

Description: as per attached leaflet, "A.B.C. of Japanese." This was produced in conformity with GLOTTIS for field (GLOTTIS sample available on request). Simple Japanese sentences translated into Malay, purporting to be Japanese-Malay lessons. A liberal amount of subversion injected into the sentences, which are interspersed with simple grammar sentences. Japanese-Malay Lessons, March 9, 1945

Project Nerve

The original book was taken from the pocket of a Japanese soldier who died on the battlefield at Manila. After the contents of the book were carefully examined by American Intelligence Officers and it became known that the book only concerned Indonesia and not the Philippines, an American Intelligence Officer came to us and said: "Read this book carefully and judge for yourselves what Japan intends to do to your country!" ... Common soldiers should cultivate intimate relations with natives with ends in mind of marrying native girls, of securing their lands, and of creating a mixed race capable of spreading the way of the Emporer throughout the entire islands. However, such should not be the case with officers; the officers should refrain from this practice lest they should spoil the purity of the Japanese race with the blood of an inferior race. Project Nerve: Common Sense About Indonesia, April 1945

Recruit Native Home Defense Corps "to defend the island and Islam." These will be used for forced labor. Use utmost care in approaching native women. Officers especially should thus obtain the good will of respectable families with a view to marrying their daughters and engendering a race of Nippon-Indonesians to rule Indonesia in the future, for the Glory of the Emporer. Nerve Instructions, circa 1945

To quote from this R & A Study: "During the birth of a child, the husband must not be present in the house. The husband and the midwife are supposed to be ashamed of each other, and therefore practice avoidance." This could nicely give birth to a rumor that new-born Indonesian babies were being quickly substituted at birth for illegitimate Minangkabau-Japanese babies with the collusion of the midwife in charge. ... Instances were multiplying of Japanese soldiers who were taking advantage of the isolation of Minangkabau women from their husbands. Suitable measures were being taken to punish the Japanese offenders, but at the same time, Minangkabau husbands, mamaqs, and lovers are hereby warned to keep a sharp eye open not only for prowling Japanese males, but also for the acquiescent attitude on the part of Minangkabau females. Japan did not want to be responsible for a nation of Minangkabau-Japanese illegitimate children. In the first place, it did not suit Japanese ideas of not mixing blood with inferior peoples; in the second place, it presented difficult administrative and financial problems. Project Windpipe

Windpipe motto: "Allah is God and Hirohito is his Prophet," printed above pix of Mosque in Kobe. On reverse side is Japanese translation printed above (hence insulting Koran) WINDPIPE motto, and statement in Malay about how nicely Islam blends with Shinto. Windpipe, April 10, 1945

Match box cover with subverted motto of the Moslem Profession of Faith (Kalimah) to read: "There is no God but one God and Hirohito is His Messenger (or Prophet)." Match Box Cover Project, circa 1945

If the Japs bow in the direction of Tokyo and to the sun, they are worshipping their idols. Moreover they believe that they themselves are descendants of idols. That is the reason they are so haughty. That is the reason why they force you to bow before their idols, and before the Japanese soldiers. But beware this, brothers: If you bow in the Japanese way it means that you worship their idols. You can't do that. Moslems in Indonesia!, circa 1945

You shall believe in Allah and his apostle, and struggle hard in Allah way with your property and your lives, that is better for you, did you but know! To begin with Asalamoi 'alaikoem, is followed with a happy New Year wish, to all our Muslim brothers, together with the Indonesian masses. Let us pray to God that in this war Japan be quickly defeated (for these infidel - the enemies of God) if undefeated, will be the doom of Islam. Fighting Champions of Indonesia, Oct. 14, 1944

Because, as this war continues from day to day, the threat to G.E.A. increases, therefore we, the representatives of the Japanese government, who are at present in control of Indonesia appeal to every Moslem to offer two additional obeisances after completing his required prayers. (rekaat - the series of ritual movements that follow a Moslem prayer and can be used as a way of counting how many prayers a devotee has said.) Pray to almighty Allah that Japan may quickly win this war. Without the assistance of Allah, we cannot win this religious war easily. Because of that, those Mohammedans who are loyal to Our Majesty the Tenno heika should offer at least ten (rekaat) optional supplications per day. ...Commencing today, whoever lives or is in the neighborhood of a military reservation or a hospital is forbidden to make any unnecessary noice such as the early morning call to prayer or the beating of the prayer drum in afternoon disturbs the serenity of the sick Japanese soldiers or those who are sleeping. You can pray to your God, but the health and well-being of the Japanese Army are not to be tampered with. Fake Announcements Project, April 25, 1945
