Pakistan has paid a heavy price for the September 11th atttacks, even though no one in Pakistan had any involvement in it. The Pakistani government is facing incredible pressures, both from within, and from it's main supporter of late, the United States. Pakistan is a country that has never known democracy since its creation in 1947. There is a great threat of the Afghan conflict spilling across the border, as Afghan insurgents regain the upper hand. Although the west, and particularly the United States, is primarily concerned with losing control over the Pakistani government, the Pakistani people have much to fear from the internationalization of the Afghan conflict. The Pakistani military has already bombed its own people in the Northwest Frontier and Baluchistan at the bequest of the United States. We traveled through Pakistan in 2003, visiting Peshawar and the Khyber Pass. We have assisted several Pakistani people with legal problems ranging from government corruption to freedom of the press. Although we have not had the opportunity to do anything to help victims of the war on terrorism in Pakistan, we follow Pakistani politics closely and count numerous Pakistani journalists among our friends. We have also done significant work on the history of Pakistan at the US National Archives, cited in various articles in Urdu. See link to the left.
