We are concerned about the loss of freedom and legal rights in the United States, not only as a result of the "war on terrorism," but as part of a longer trend that stretches back to the early 1980s. We represent defendants in federal criminal cases, as well as civil actions to enjoin and compensate for misconduct by government officials. For the recent NSA spying scandal, we have written demand letters on behalf of ourselves as well as clients, for money damages as provided for by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. We are awaiting the outcome of congressional investigations and legislation before filing suit. It's not easy to prove you were spied on by the NSA. We've done extensive research on the subject of domestic operations to neutralize radical political groups in the 1960s. (see COINTELPRO research, to the left) Although we are not aware of any similar programs today, the excesses of this period serve as a reminder of our national tendency to overreact to perceived threats, and just how far we are from being the beacon of democracy we could be.
